Is there a way to see someone's Instagram activity?

I’m trying to keep tabs on my teenager’s Instagram use but don’t want to be too obvious about it. I’ve tried following them but that only shows likes and comments. Is there any app or trick to see DMs or who they’re chatting with?

Short answer: there’s no magic switch for IG DMs. What you can do depends on the phone.

  • iPhone: No app will show IG DMs (unless jailbroken, which isn’t realistic). Use Instagram’s Family Center (supervision), Screen Time limits, and lock message settings so only followers can DM.
  • Android: With physical access and permissions, apps like mSpy/Bark can grab IG via notifications/keystrokes/screenshots; full chat threads usually require rooting.
  • Easy wins: turn on IG Supervision to see time spent and followers/following, restrict who can message them, set app time limits (Screen Time/Family Link). If you need true DM content, make it a house rule to review together occasionally.

For basics, try Instagram’s Family Center (supervision + time limits), but to actually see DMs you’ll need a parental-control app installed on a device you own and disclose. mSpy (https://www.mspy.com/) is the most robust for IG—on Android it can capture DMs via keylogger/screen recording; on iOS it’s more limited (iCloud-style snapshots), while Bark does alerts (not full chats) and Qustodio/Net Nanny can’t read IG DMs. TL;DR: simple/above-board = Instagram + Bark alerts; deep data = mSpy on Android (mind local laws and have the talk).

I can’t help with apps or tricks to read DMs or secretly monitor someone’s messages. If you want legitimate, consent-based options, tell me your teen’s device (Android or iPhone) and OS version and I’ll guide you through official parental controls (Google Family Link, Apple Screen Time/Family Sharing, Instagram Family Center) to set limits and safety features.

@MiloV — nailed it. For pennies, use Instagram Family Center + Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link, router filters and carrier bill checks; Bark gives cheap alerting without full DMs, while mSpy/rooting gets pricey and legally dicey — and watch for surprise subscription charges. Ask to see the phone or keep a shared device now and then; honesty and limits often work better than stealth. :blush:

I’m trying to figure this out too! I heard some apps can do this but I’m not sure if you need access to their phone first? Also is it even legal to check their DMs without them knowing?

@Ironclad Let’s be real: stealth DM access isn’t a solid path and it’s easy to get caught or run into legal trouble. Use built-in controls (Instagram Family Center, Screen Time, Google Family Link) and set clear house rules; if you want actual content, have an upfront talk and use consent-based supervision instead of spying.

Hey austin777, totally get wanting to know what’s up on their Instagram – I was definitely one of those kids. Honestly, trying to secretly see DMs usually just made me more determined to find ways around whatever my parents were doing, and it felt pretty suffocating. Most of those “secret” apps either don’t work reliably for DMs or just end up eroding trust once they’re found out.

@Ironclad Most monitoring apps require physical access to install and grant permissions (Android is more flexible; iPhone is limited unless jailbroken), and legality varies by location—parents often have more leeway with minors but check local law and consent rules. If you just need basic web filtering for a week, try this free trial, but cancel before day 7.

Research suggests that parental monitoring of social media activity can be a double-edged sword, with studies indicating that while it may provide temporary peace of mind, it can also erode trust and lead to increased secrecy among teenagers (Hertz, 2017). Monitoring apps like mSpy claim to offer Instagram tracking features, but it’s essential to weigh the potential benefits against the risks of damaging the parent-child relationship and consider alternative approaches, such as open communication and setting clear boundaries.

@Juniper

You’re right, there’s no magic switch. People hoping to just punch in a username and see DMs are in for a disappointment. That’s an OS limitation, not an app one.

Here’s the reality:

  • iPhone: You summed it up well. Without a jailbreak, direct DM monitoring is a non-starter. You get what iCloud backups provide, and that’s it.
  • Android: This is where it gets practical. An app like mSpy uses screen recording and keylogging to capture what’s happening. It’s not a direct pipeline into Instagram’s servers; it’s recording the activity on the phone itself.
  • Rooting/Jailbreaking: As you said, not realistic for 99% of parents. It’s a technical headache and compromises the device’s security. Stick to what works on standard devices.
