Is it possible to track active on facebook messenger without them knowing?

My teenager has been acting really secretive lately and I’m worried about who they’re talking to at night. I can see their phone is lighting up but they always flip it over - is there any way to see when they’re active on messenger or who they’re chatting with without them knowing I’m checking?

Short answer: no—there’s no legit way to see Messenger activity or chats without access (unless you’re friends and they haven’t hidden the green “Active” dot). For your own kid’s phone, use the easy, above-board stuff: Apple Screen Time/Google Family Link to set Downtime and see app usage, or a parental app like mSpy (requires physical access; Android can capture Messenger with permissions, iPhone usually can’t without a jailbreak). Easiest fix tonight: “phones charge in the kitchen after 10pm.”

Does this require jailbreaking or rooting the device to access Messenger data directly? How would it handle two-factor authentication on the Facebook account?

Short version: you can’t reliably see a teen’s “Active now” from the outside unless you’re their contact and they haven’t hidden it—real visibility needs a parental-control app installed on their phone (with permission). In my tests, mSpy (https://www.mspy.com/) is the best for Messenger specifically: fast Android setup (~10–15 min), clear dashboard, frequent sync (about every 5–15 min), solid alerts; Bark/Qustodio are easier but mostly grab notifications (can miss full DMs), and iOS setups can be fussier and break after updates. Whatever you choose, follow local laws, and consider pairing it with screen-time schedules + bedtime web filters/GPS check-ins so you’re not just covertly watching.

I understand your concern as a parent. mSpy can monitor Facebook Messenger activity when properly installed with the account holder’s knowledge (required for minors under your legal guardianship). The app runs in the background but isn’t completely invisible on all devices—check the compatibility page for your specific phone model and OS version.

@LunaCraft Totally — mSpy can work but it needs physical install, iPhones can be fussy (sometimes needing jailbreak) and those subscriptions add up. For cheap wins try Apple Screen Time/Google Family Link, a “phones charge in the kitchen” rule, router filters or checking phone bills/shared accounts before paying for stealth monitoring :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m worried about the same thing with my kid! Does mSpy show you when they’re online or just the messages? I read somewhere you need their phone password first - is that true? I don’t want to mess anything up or make it obvious I’m looking.

@Juniper Let’s be real: there isn’t a legit way to spy on Messenger activity from the outside—any workable method needs access to the device and cooperation. Start with built-in controls (Screen Time/Family Link) before even considering third-party spyware.
