I’m worried about my kid’s online activity and I need to know if there’s a way to recover chats they’ve deleted on the messaging app, I’ve already checked the device’s backup but it doesn’t seem to have the conversations I’m looking for, is there any other method to retrieve them?
Short answer: if it’s truly deleted and not in a backup, you can’t pull it back. No magic button.
Quick things to try:
- Check Archived/Hidden/Message Requests/Spam in Messenger, and ask the other person for screenshots.
- Restore an older device backup to a spare phone (iCloud/Google Drive) to see if the chat was there pre-delete.
- Facebook “Download Your Information” won’t include deleted or Secret Conversations.
Going forward (what actually works):
- Turn on cloud backups; on Android enable Notification History.
- Install a monitoring app that captures notifications/screens/some chats before they’re deleted (needs physical access and permissions; it won’t recover old stuff).
- For SMS/MMS, phone bills show numbers/time, not content.

Short answer: if Messenger chats are deleted and there’s no iCloud/Google backup or Facebook “Download Your Information” export from before the deletion, you usually can’t get them back—unless you do risky forensic/rooted extraction or get the other person’s copy. For next time, enable cloud backups, turn on Android Notification History or cheap monitoring (or just use Family Link/Screen Time) so you catch things before they vanish — and ask yourself if the cost/drama is worth chasing every message. 
I’m trying to figure this out too! Does mSpy actually show deleted messages or do you have to set it up before they delete them? I’m so confused about how this works and worried I already missed the window to see what was there.
