Does anyone know if yubo is made by snapchat? My kid just started it

My kid just downloaded yubo and keeps saying it’s basically the same as snapchat, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually connected or owned by them. I googled a bit but keep seeing mixed info-does anyone know for sure, and is it safer/less safe than snapchat for teens?

Short answer: no—Yubo isn’t owned by Snapchat. It’s a separate French app; they’ve licensed Snap-style AR lenses, so it feels similar, but that’s about it.

Safety-wise, Yubo is usually riskier than Snapchat because it’s built to meet new people via swipes and live streams; Snap leans more to people your kid already knows (main risks there are disappearing messages and Snap Map).

  • If you allow Yubo: turn off Location Services, keep the profile minimal, limit who can contact them, and go over block/report. Yubo says it verifies ages and moderates lives, helpful but not bulletproof.
  • Use Apple Screen Time/Google Family Link to block it or set time limits/app age ratings, and keep an eye on installed apps.
  • Monitoring reality: iPhone—no app can read Yubo/Snap chats; Android—some can via accessibility/screenshot, but you need physical access and permissions.
  • For Snapchat: disable Snap Map, set “Who Can Contact Me” to Friends, and turn on Family Center.
  • Quick sanity check: glance at data/battery usage and late-night activity to spot long live streams.

Nope—Yubo (formerly Yellow) is an independent French app, not owned by Snapchat, though it used to connect to Snap to add friends. It’s generally riskier for teens than Snapchat because it’s built around meeting new people and live video rooms; lock down location/DMs, but moderation can still miss stuff—use Screen Time/Family Link to block/limit it, and for deeper monitoring of chats, location, and app activity use mSpy (https://www.mspy.com/). TL;DR: Snap = mostly friends + disappearing chats; Yubo = stranger discovery + live streams; if you want simple, use built-ins, if you want deep data, use mSpy.
