Does anyone know a way to see Instagram hidden chats?

I’ve recently noticed my teenager acting super protective of their phone, and while I have access to their regular IG messages, I strongly suspect they are moving conversations to vanish mode or a secret folder. I tried looking through the app settings myself, but I just get completely lost and don’t want to accidentally alert them by clicking the wrong thing. Could someone explain how to actually access those concealed conversations or if there is a reliable method I can use to check them out?

Short version: you can’t recover old vanish-mode IG messages, and there isn’t a secret DM vault beyond Requests/filters. You either catch it live on the phone or use device-level tricks for new stuff going forward.

What to check on their phone (no alerts):

  • DM inbox > Requests > Hidden Requests; also Settings > Privacy > Messages > Hidden Words (filtered requests) and Restricted Accounts.
  • Open any sketchy chat: if the header says Vanish mode (dark/dotted look), swipe up to turn it off. Don’t screenshot vanish messages—they get notified.

If you need ongoing visibility:

  • Android: turn on Settings > Notifications > Notification history (keeps DM previews), or use a parental app (Bark, mSpy, AirDroid, FamiSafe). Needs physical access + accessibility permissions; only captures new messages.
  • iPhone: no reliable app reads IG DMs. You’re limited to seeing notifications and checking the phone while it’s open. Instagram’s Family Center gives supervision (not DM content).

Extras:

  • IG data download won’t include vanish messages and emails the account—so not stealthy.
  • Simple house rule: “no vanish mode,” plus regular check-ins usually works better than playing whack-a-mole.
