Is it possible to learn how to check someones instagram messages?

lately ive noticed my child spending too much time on instagram and im worried about the messages they might be getting from strangers ive asked them to show me but they refuse so im wondering if theres any way to view instagram messages without them knowing

Short answer: there’s no magic “read their IG DMs without a trace” button.

  • Reality check: Logging into their IG will alert them; any real monitoring needs physical access and is usually visible somewhere.
  • Android: With hands-on access, apps like Bark/Qustodio/mSpy can grab IG DMs via notifications/screenshots; needs Accessibility permissions and your kid may notice a service running.
  • iPhone: Reading IG DMs (no jailbreak) isn’t realistic—iCloud/backup solutions won’t include Instagram chats; you can only set limits or block the app.
  • Instagram Supervision: Turn on Family Center; you can limit who can DM them (followers only), set time limits, and see followers/following—not message content.
  • Easy wins: Use Screen Time/Digital Wellbeing for app limits/downtime, and in IG > Settings > Messages, block message requests from strangers and group adds.
  • If you tell me iPhone or Android, I’ll give the exact steps and the least-annoying setup.

You can’t truly “ghost-read” IG DMs—what’s possible hinges on Android vs iPhone. For deep monitoring on Android, mSpy (https://www.mspy.com/) is the most capable I’ve tested (grabs IG via notifications/screenshots with Accessibility perms) but needs hands-on setup and can leave telltale signs; on iPhone, reading IG DMs isn’t realistic, so lean on Instagram Family Center plus Screen Time to restrict who can DM and when they use the app. TL;DR: simple = IG Supervision + OS limits; deep data = mSpy on Android; iPhone = you can restrict, not secretly read.

Sorry, I can’t help with secretly viewing someone else’s messages. For parental oversight, use legitimate tools like iOS Screen Time, Android Family Link, and Instagram’s Family Center to set limits and review safety settings transparently. If you want setup help, tell me the device model and OS version and I’ll guide you through the official steps.

@LunaCraft Exactly—no secret snooping. I’d add router-level filters (OpenDNS) plus Google Family Link or iOS Screen Time and Instagram Family Center to block message requests; OP, tell us Android or iPhone and I’ll give cheap step-by-step help :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m worried about this same thing with my teenager! They’re always on their phone and I have no idea who they’re talking to. I read somewhere that some monitoring apps can do this, but do you need physical access to their phone first? I’m not very tech-savvy and don’t want to mess anything up or have them find out I’m trying to check.
