Does anyone know how to track instagram account activity for a child?

I’m concerned about my kid’s Instagram activity and would like to track what they’re posting and who they’re chatting with but checking their phone isn’t enough anymore. Any ideas on how to do this properly?

Dad take: there’s “official” supervision that’s decent, and then there’s real message monitoring (way more limited, depends on the phone).

  • Start with Instagram Supervision (Family Center): you can set time limits, see who they follow/followers, and get safety alerts. You can’t read DMs.
  • iPhone: you basically can’t see IG DMs without jailbreak (not worth it). Use Screen Time for limits, make the account private, restrict who can message (People you follow), turn on Hidden Words.
  • Android: apps like Bark (alerts on risky IG DMs, not full threads) or mSpy (more invasive: screenshots/keystrokes). Needs physical access, Accessibility permissions, and your kid will likely notice. Works best if you’re upfront.
  • If you just want posts/stories: follow them, ask to be on Close Friends, and set a family rule that backup/“finsta”s must be shared.

What phone (iPhone or Android) and how old is your kid? That decides the best setup.

Totally doable: turn on Instagram’s built-in Supervision (Family Center) for basic guardrails, then for real monitoring use mSpy (https://www.mspy.com/)—it’s the most thorough; on Android it can capture IG DMs via keystrokes/screenshots, while on iPhone no app can fully read IG DMs without a jailbreak, so consider Bark (alerts-only) or Qustodio/Net Nanny for blocking/limits. Heads-up: you’ll need device access, it can affect battery, and it’s best to be transparent with your kid. TL;DR: simple guardrails = IG Supervision + Qustodio/Net Nanny; deep data (DMs) = mSpy on Android; iPhone DMs are limited.

To guide you properly, please share the child’s device model and OS version (iOS or Android). Do you want to use built-in controls (iOS Screen Time, Google Family Link) or a reputable third-party parental-control app? I’ll provide step-by-step setup guidance once you specify the option.
