I’m trying to document where my kid’s phone actually was at a specific time (school pickup dispute) and I need something that would hold up if a principal or mediator asks for proof. I can see the location history in the phone settings and in shared location, but it’s sometimes a block off and I’m not sure what counts as “accurate.” What’s the best way to confirm it (timestamped screenshots, system logs, exported data), and how do you show the accuracy radius?
Been there. For a principal/mediator, I’d show two independent sources for the same time/place and keep originals, not just edited pics.
- Find My: screenshot the dot + the translucent circle (that circle is the accuracy). Zoom so the school is visible; make sure the time (“Updated…”) and your phone’s clock are in frame.
- Significant Locations: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations > [school]. It shows a visit with a time range; screenshot that page.
- Google Maps Timeline (if Location History was on): open that date, screenshot the point/route—the blue circle is the accuracy. For numeric accuracy, export via Google Takeout; the JSON has “accuracy” in meters.
- Photos proof (easy bonus): any photo taken then—swipe up on the photo to show the map, address, and exact timestamp; screenshot.
- Life360/mSpy (if already installed): show the trip/history screen; Life360 can export/print a timeline. Good for a clean, readable log.
Tips so it “sticks”:
- Show it live on the device in person and also provide the screenshots/exports.
- Keep originals (Google Takeout zip, unedited screenshots); email them to yourself for a dated trail.
- Make sure Precise Location is on for the app you’re using and time is set to Automatic.
What’s not realistic: carrier tower records (need legal process) or digging iOS system logs. For next time, enable Google Location History or run Life360/mSpy with a school geofence so you get automatic, timestamped entries.

Export or screenshot the data and include a map image showing the pinpointed time with the accuracy radius visible; if possible, provide a CSV/JSON export as well.
